Long Trail Day 1: Roots, Rocks, and Rain - My First Thru-Hike Adventure Begins! (2026)

The Long Trail: A Thru-Hiker's Journey Begins

Today, I embark on a journey that will test my limits and offer an unforgettable experience. The Pine Cobble Trail, my starting point, sets the tone for what lies ahead—a trail filled with roots, elevation, and breathtaking views.

The Trail's First Steps

As I checked my bag one last time, a sense of excitement and anticipation filled the air. Steph, my fiancé, and I began our approach to the Pine Cobble Trail, and I couldn't help but feel a connection to nature as we spotted a family of turkeys along the way. It was a good omen, a sign of the adventure to come.

The Long Trail approach revealed its beauty, but it was the iconic wooden sign of the southern Long Trail marker that truly captivated me. It symbolized the beginning of an epic journey, and I shared a moment of celebration with Steph, enjoying pizza and a pump-up song before our paths diverged.

Finding My Trail Zone

The trail ahead was challenging, with rocks and roots underfoot, and several beaverponds to navigate. The sun added an extra layer of difficulty, but as the trail meandered into the woods, I found my zone. I was in my element, and the day's journey felt like a dance through nature.

My original plan was to reach Congdon Shelter, but a large stream and the need to refill my water bottles changed my course. The day was young, and the shelter was empty, inviting me to push further. So, I continued, cruising towards a new destination.

Weathering the Storm

As I approached Harmon Hill, the first great view revealed something unexpected—storms were approaching quickly. The sound of rain on leaves grew louder, and I knew I had to act fast. I descended back into the protective embrace of the forest, thinking, "Well, I'm in it now!"

The trail led me towards Route 9, and I pushed on with determination. The descent was steep and rocky, requiring my full attention. My legs felt like rubber as I approached the road, but I persevered, knowing the worst was behind me.

Reaching the Shelter

The Melville Shelter seemed like a distant dream, but with sunset approaching, I picked up the pace. A dirt road offered a glimmer of hope, and I decided to push further, knowing the shelter was within reach. Far Out, a trail marker, confirmed my progress, and I found a new gear, determined to reach my destination.

Finally, I arrived at the Melville Shelter, exhausted but content. I finished my pizza, set up my pad and quilt, and called it a day. The journey had been challenging, but the sense of accomplishment and the peace of the shelter made it all worthwhile.

A Thru-Hiker's Perspective

Personally, I think the Long Trail is more than just a physical challenge. It's a mental journey, a test of one's resilience and connection to nature. The trail offers a unique perspective, and I believe it's these unexpected moments, like weathering a storm or finding one's zone, that make the experience truly transformative.

What many people don't realize is that it's not just about reaching the end; it's about the lessons learned and the growth that occurs along the way. If you take a step back and think about it, the Long Trail is a metaphor for life—full of challenges, beauty, and the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles.

I'm excited to share more of my thru-hike adventure with you, and I hope my journey inspires others to embrace the unknown and find their own trail zones.
