Minnesota's healthcare system has always been a shining example of what a shared commitment to healthcare can achieve. However, recent developments have raised red flags, and it's time for us to take action.
The recent merger between South Dakota-based Sanford Health and North Memorial in Minnesota is a stark reminder of the growing trend of large hospital systems and private equity corporations encroaching on our local healthcare providers. This merger, like others, threatens to disrupt the delicate balance of healthcare access and affordability that Minnesota has worked so hard to maintain.
The Minnesota Health Care Accountability Act is a crucial step in the right direction. This proposal aims to bring much-needed transparency to the cost and access implications of hospital and private equity acquisitions. By ensuring that these mergers are subject to scrutiny, we can prevent predatory corporate practices from overshadowing patient care and safety.
The issue of corporate takeover in healthcare is not isolated to Minnesota. Private equity firms have been increasingly targeting healthcare entities across the country. In 2012, they owned 816 physician practices, and by 2021, that number had skyrocketed to 5,779. As of February 2024, private equity firms owned nearly 460 hospitals, raising concerns about the impact on patients and healthcare delivery.
The consolidation of healthcare entities often leads to higher prices and reduced competition. Research suggests that these mergers can result in up to 65% higher prices for care services and up to 32% higher costs for payers and patients. For instance, when large hospital systems acquire independent medical clinics, they may increase costs without providing any substantial improvements in care.
In Minnesota, we have already witnessed the effects of consolidation. The proposed acquisition of Allina Health by California-based Sutter Health is a prime example. This merger would create a massive nonprofit entity, controlled by management based in California, which is a significant distance from Minnesota's rural communities.
The consequences of these corporate buyouts are particularly severe in rural areas. Minnesota's rural communities already face challenges in accessing healthcare, with a shortage of primary care physicians and limited options for mental healthcare, surgery, and other essential services. The situation is dire, with 45% of rural Minnesota hospitals no longer providing labor and delivery services.
To address these issues, we need to take action at both the state and federal levels. The Minnesota Health Care Accountability Act is a crucial step at the state level, ensuring transparency in mergers and acquisitions. Additionally, Congress can play a vital role by requiring site-neutral pricing, preventing patients from being charged more simply because a large hospital system has purchased their local clinic.
As a pediatrician, I have made a solemn promise to always prioritize my patients' health and safety. However, the threat of corporate takeover endangers this promise. These corporations prioritize profits over patient care, and it's time for us to stand up and protect our healthcare system. Minnesota's children, parents, and grandparents deserve a healthcare system that values their health and accessibility.
